Acts of kindness inspire us, whether it’s taking time to help an employee at the office, or defending a person being picked on by bullies, the recipients of these gestures are always grateful.
In recent years, a local TV channel had a long-running campaign called “Random Acts of Kindness.” Their news anchors went out into the community and surprised an unsuspecting person with a kind gesture such as paying for someone’s lunch or filling up someone’s tank with gas. As you’d expect, the recipients of those acts of kindness always tried to repay them for such selflessness and generosity, only to be met with one request: that they would surprise someone else with a similar gesture.
Kindness begets unselfishness, and our communities could certainly use a little more kindness these days!
How important is kindness? You might as well ask,”How important is water or oxygen?” That’s a bold statement, I know – but God must agree, because Proverbs 19:22 tells us, “What is desirable in a man is kindness.”
The one person who comes to mind when I think of kindness is Jesus Christ. He shows us that God is kind. And because He is kind to us, we are to be kind to one another.
Especially in a busy world where so many seem to be looking out for number one, acts of kindness can be a powerful expression of Christ. How can you show someone kindness today? Just maybe, your simple act of kindness will point them closer to God.
