LAYING ASIDE ‘EVERY WEIGHT’

Hebrews 12:1-2

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

In our text above, the Bible says, “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us….” Most times we focus on ‘laying aside the sin which easily besets us’ and we ignore the part of ‘laying aside every weight.’ Doing both of them is very important and many times it is the weights that lead us into sin.

Some weights are not outright sins, but they put pressure on us to sin. They are wrong mindsets and attitudes that weaken our ability to resist sin when temptations arise. An example of such weight is envy. Psalms 73:2-3 says, “But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” Other examples are keeping company with the wrong friends, being impatient, proud, not controlling your temper, and being greedy. Some weights are outright sinful and lead to more sin. An example of such is being lustful.

To lay aside such weight, we must first identify them. Ask yourself, “What wrong mindsets and attitudes do I have that seem to put pressure on me or open the door for sin to easily beset me?” Then look unto Jesus and renew your mind in those areas. Keep declaring the truth of what Jesus has done for you. You are a new creature.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please help to me focus on Christ to renew my mind and change every attitude in me that leads me into sin.
