LESSONS FROM CALEB’S COMMITMENT TO GOD

Numbers 13:30, Joshua 14:7-9 (NIV)

And Caleb stilled the people…and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. *I was forty years old when Moses …sent me … to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, but my brothers … made the hearts of the people melt with fear. I, however, followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly. So… Moses swore to me, ‘The land … will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the LORD my God wholeheartedly.

Two major attributes that are popularly known about Caleb, are his great courage/different perspective of the challenges he and the other spies saw in the Promised Land (Numb.14:6-9), as well as his great strength and willingness to still conquer territories even at the age of eighty five, (Josh.14:10-12). One attribute of his that is not much talked about, is his wholehearted commitment to God. His wholehearted commitment to God is actually the foundation for his great courage and strength. To follow God wholeheartedly is to give your all to Him and to go all out to please Him and do His will no matter what it will cost you. You cannot follow God wholeheartedly if you do not trust Him that He will lead and manifest His blessing in your life as you follow Him. Your commitment to God will affect your attitude in the time of challenges.

Caleb did not become wholeheartedly committed to God because of the challenges he saw, rather, they were simply an opportunity for his wholehearted commitment to God to be revealed. The other spies were God’s people, but were not following God wholeheartedly and it affected their ability to overcome their challenges and receive the land and promise that God had for them. To overcome our challenges and become all God wants us to be, we must follow God wholeheartedly. As we follow God wholeheartedly, a genuine transformation takes place in us and our perspectives and attitudes begin to differ from that of others. We begin to see things like God does and we respond to things like He does too. This will make us stand out wherever we find ourselves. Not only will we overcome our challenges, God will use us to give hope to others and help them overcome their challenges too.

Prayer:
Dear Father, I trust in you and I give my all to you. I am ready to follow you and go all out to please you always. Help me follow you wholeheartedly.
