LESSONS FROM JOSHUA’S COMMITMENT TO GOD

Joshua 1:1-2 (GNB), Joshua 11:15 (LB) After the death of the LORD’s servant Moses, the LORD spoke to Moses’ helper, Joshua son of Nun. He said, “My servant Moses is dead. Get ready now, you and all the people of Israel, and cross the Jordan River into the land that I am giving them.*For so the Lord had commanded his disciple Moses; and Moses had passed the commandment on to Joshua, who did as he had been told: he carefully obeyed all of the Lord’s instructions to Moses.

The life of Joshua is filled with so many wonderful lessons for us. Joshua was an excellent soldier (Exo.17:9), but had a very strong spiritual background and foundation. It is possible to be excellent in your secular job or responsibility and also be strong in your relationship and commitment to God. The Bible also describes Joshua as a helper/ minister or ‘personal assistant’ to Moses. Moses usually took Joshua along with him whenever Moses was going to meet with God (Exo.24:13-14). It so happened that there were times that after Moses left God’s presence, Joshua stayed behind there. He apparently loved being in the presence of God. Exodus 33:11 (GNB) declares that, “the LORD would speak with Moses face-to-face, just as someone speaks with a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp. But the young man who was his helper, Joshua son of Nun, stayed in the Tent.” When God was instructing Moses to appoint Joshua as the next leader, God described Joshua as someone who had His Spirit in him, (Numb.27:18, LB). He had a heart for God and He was committed to following God, drawing closer to Him and pleasing Him.

Later, the Bible records that Joshua was full of the Spirit of wisdom because Moses laid hands on him, (Deut.34:9). There is no reason why you should not be excellent in your profession or work and also fervent in your relationship with God. God wants to use both your spiritual fervency and your skilful and professional excellence to do great exploits. Be excellent in all areas of your life. Joshua was strong in spirit, soul and body. He was a man of faith. And like our second text above shows us, He was able to do everything that God wanted him to do. This shall be your testimony also.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father please help me to be strong and excellent in my spirit, my soul and body. Use me for exploits. I want to do your will o Lord.
