LET’S TALK ABOUT WORK

October 08, 2023

“You have six days each week for your ordinary work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you.” Exodus 20:9-10a

Most of us feel the drive to be successful in our work. Unfortunately, that drive doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Conversely, there is the other side of the spectrum where some find themselves oblivious even to the idea of work.

So, let’s talk about work and the two extremes that are common.

ONE EXTREME IS LAZINESS

We live in a society that so often glorifies the irresponsible–those who won’t work–as victims. Somehow they feel they are “owed” something. This is insulting to those who are truly unable to work. But God’s Word is clear; laziness is not good and He wants us to work hard.

AT THE OTHER EXTREME IS THE WORKAHOLIC

There are four common traits for this type of person, who:

  • tends to be the first person at the office and the last to leave
  • tries to please others and has a tough time saying “No”
  • tends to only talk about work.
  • tends to feel guilty taking a day off

Neither being lazy nor being a workaholic are God’s intentions for us. It’s about finding the right balance between working hard to please God and taking time to back away and rest.

Friend, if you’re struggling with the work/rest balance, start with taking a weekly Sabbath. It’s one of God’s important ideas that sets aside time for rest, reflection, and communication with God.

When we prioritize a Sabbath day, we find ourselves refreshed and ready to give our best to our work, our families, and God.

So, are you bound by one of the two extremes? Ask for God’s help to find your rest/work balance in life.
