LIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE SPIRIT

Ephesians 5:17-18 (NLT, AMPC) Don’t act thoughtlessly,…understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don’t be drunk with wine,…that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the…Spirit *..do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the…Spirit.

God has graciously given us the Holy Spirit as our helper. Jesus described the Holy Spirit as another comforter (just like Him), who will abide with us forever and be our Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby, (John 14:16, AMPC). By having the Holy Spirit in our lives, we are actually more privileged than the disciples who had Jesus physically with them, (John 16:7, NKJV).

Now, though the Holy Spirit is always with us and His glory, blessings and power are always available to us, He never forces Himself upon us. For us to perpetually maximize His presence and impact in our lives, we must be deliberate about always bringing ourselves under His influence. It is just like what happens when a person gets drunk. He or she comes under the influence of the alcoholic drink and begins to experience and do negative things he would not ordinarily experience and do. The influence of Spirit on the other hand gives us glorious and positive experiences.

Just as people don’t get drunk by accident, we do not come under the influence of the Spirit by accident. We must be deliberate about bringing ourselves under His influence always. This is what our text above refers to as ever being filled and stimulated with the Spirit.

Prayer:

I thank you Dear Father for the great privilege of having the Holy Spirit in me always. I yield myself to the Spirit right now.
