LOVE AND DISCERNMENT

Philippians 1:9-10 (NIV, CEV)

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,*I pray that your love will keep on growing and that you will fully know and understand how to make the right choices. Then you will still be pure and innocent when Christ returns….

As we grow and increase in the love of God, we need to also grow and increase in discernment. Discernment here refers to the ability to perceive and understand situations beyond their obvious or face value, and this is very necessary for making the right choices.

Discernment is very necessary for the preservation of your faith and life as a whole. The fact that you are walking in love does not mean you should be foolish and sentimental and not prudent. There are times that you have to make tough decisions though you are walking in love. An example is when you have to practise or mete out discipline. The Bible says it is whom God loves that He chastens, (Heb.12:6). Ephesians 4:16 emphasizes the need for us to grow up into Christ in all things by speaking the truth in love. Don’t hold back or compromise the truth because you want to show love and don’t allow the fact that you want to speak or uphold the truth to stop you from walking in love. You must know how to draw the line and achieve balance.

To grow and increase in discernment, you must grow and increase in the truth and wisdom of God. Just as you need the help of the Spirit to grow in the love of God, you need His help to grow in discernment and spiritual insight. You will know what to accept and what to reject.

Prayer:
Father, please help me to grow and increase in your love and to also grow and increase in discernment, by your Spirit.
