According to the dictionary, lust is a strong desire and a strong feeling of sexual desire. Lust is a way of satisfying the flesh and its desires. According to the Scripture, lust is referred to the works of the flesh, which manifests itself in the following forms: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envying, murders, drunkenness and revellings (Galatians 5:19-21). These worldly desires are not from God, they are the results of sin, which contaminated this world through man’s disobedience. These worldly desires are anything that draws our hearts away from God.

Lust is a tree with branches, and it is made up of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life, and it is soiled in the human heart. The lust of the flesh is any evil intents stirred by our physical or emotional needs, particularly the desire for pleasures. The lust of the eyes speaks of any evil intents stirred by the things we see and covet (things we like to have by all means), including the desires for passion and possessions. The pride of life speaks of any wicked desire motivated by pride, power, prestige and fame.

A number of people have had their destinies cut short for lustful desires. Death is one of the resultant effects of lustful desires. A young man in Scripture fell in love with his half-sister, then he raped her, and so he was murdered in cold blood for his rash actions (2 Samuel 13:1-32). Lust has turned people into fraudsters, deceivers and manipulators.

Lust is the opposite of love, and it cannot abide together with God’s spirit. This rightly justifies the need to stay away from lustful desires. The Word says: This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would (Galatians 5:16-17).Lust has made many miss out on God’s plan and purpose for their lives. It affects foresight and hindsight. It makes an individual focus on instant gratification overlooking the consequences.

A wise man rightly said, ‘Lust is temporary, and love is forever’. The desire of the flesh and that of the Spirit is always at logger heads in our lives. However, the one who wins the battle is the one with much concentration. As we abide in God’s Word and allow His Spirit take control of our lives, we manifest the fruit of the Spirit, thereby becoming overcomers in the world (1 John 5:4-5).

However, knowing God and allowing His Spirit have His way in our lives begins with the journey of salvation. If you are not Born Again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.
