LUSTFUL DESIRES-2
Dear Reader,
Welcome to the concluding part of this interesting topic. I trust you are picking the nuggets on living a life pleasing to God by avoiding lust. Today, we shall be examining the second part of this teaching and considering critically the effect of lust and how to overcome it.
When you desire something badly that you think you cannot do without having it, it is lust. Lust and its desires are temporal, but if you practice self-control, you will overcome lust and gain command over the temptations that come with it.
EFFECTS OF LUST
Lust has links with so many regrettable consequences among which are:
- Loneliness and Emptiness. People fake happiness, immersing themselves in what can fill up the vacuum created in their hearts
- Addictions. Drugs, alcohol, putting up “a holier than thou” attitude etc., are indulged to get rid of the guilt that comes with temptations.
- Ungodly Relationships. Many people are committed to relationships that are heading nowhere, but an escape route is a major reason for their untimely relationship (2 Corinthians 6:14).
- Character Imbalance. They lose the right to face the public and make life-changing decisions. They compromise on issues and might even end up fighting against the right course; the pang of guilt bites harder. (1 Samuel18:11).
- Poor Results and Accomplishments. It reduces the drive to pursue, overtake and put in one’s best in assignments at home, work or in the society (John 3:27).
- Death. The adverse effect of lust is untimely death—not being able to fulfil one’s purpose. There is a case in Scripture of a young man called Amnon; due to his lust for his half-sister, he died prematurely (2 Samuel 13:1-32).
- Unfulfilled Dreams. An entire family missed being the ruling family due to sin had its root in lust (1 Chronicles 28:3).
However, to overcome lust, you must identify its triggers and uproot every bit of it around you. The Word says: This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would (Galatians 5:16-17). The lust of the flesh will keep contending with the life of the spirit, but you have to be on guard not to fulfil its dictates. Sowing to the flesh can be likened to planting a seed in a lump of clay; it will never germinate because all the conditions needed are depleted.
It is important to understand that we cannot achieve the things of the Spirit in the energy of the flesh. Therefore, if you desire the help of God to overcome lust, you must first accept Jesus as our Lord and personal Serviour. If you are not born again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.
