MAINTAINING EMOTIONAL BALANCE (1)

Dear Reader,

Grace and peace be multiplied to you, in the name of Jesus Christ! This month, you shall match on to glory, honour and virtue. The joy of the Lord that surpasses all understanding shall rest upon you!

In this edition, I shall discuss an important topic with you titled: Maintaining Emotional Balance. Every human has emotions, and these emotions are not meant to control us but to complement our lives. Everyone has been given the ability to put their emotions in check.

The truth is: emotional balance is essential to how much you can make your life beneficial, impactful and distinguished. Many destinies have crashed, and opportunities are missed because of uncontrolled emotions. Others are stagnated because they have not learnt how to use their emotions to their advantage. You must understand that emotions are not evil; God created you as an emotional being, and everything He created is good. For it is written, And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good… (Genesis 1:31).

What are Emotions?

This can be defined as strong instinctive feelings such as compassion, love, anger, worries, pride, grief, comparison, jealousy etc. From this definition, it is clear that we all have both positive and negative emotions. However, many people tend to show more negative emotions than positive emotions. They become unnecessarily angry, show extreme signs of jealousy and pride, etc., and this has ruined great destinies. If your life must be truly meaningful, you must be able to put your emotions under control, and controlling your emotions is one of the fruits of the Spirit called self-control (Galatians 5:22). Therefore, to prove you are a child of God who has control over his/her spirit, your emotions must also be controlled. It is written, He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls (Proverbs 25:28). So, for your city to be built up, your emotions must be intact. Your emotion determines your attitude, which determines your altitude or how far your life counts.

What is the Purpose of Emotions?

• To make life fulfilling: Life would have been so boring without emotions. Our different emotional outburst to situations makes our everyday dealings with people interesting, and these differences help us complement one another.
• To enhance our worship: Emotions enhance our worship of God. Our clapping, dancing, shouting, singing, kneeling, bowing, crying, lifting of hands, etc., are expressions of our emotion of love towards Him (Psalm 149:2-3). Without that, worship would have been a boring experience.
• To differentiate man from inanimate objects: God created man with emotions so as to differentiate us from inanimate objects. Jesus once said that if we refuse to praise Him, He will raise up stones to do that (Luke 19:40). This implies that our emotions bring praise to Him, and this is one attribute unique to man.

However, you must understand that your attitude flows out of and is determined by your emotions. Your words and disposition are a reflection of the state of your heart. Your heart can only be right if you are genuinely connected to Jesus, and this you do by accepting Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour. Therefore, if you have not done that or you have probably walked away from the vow you made to Him in the past, you have to say this prayer in faith right away: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God, and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.
