And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.
In 1858, a young individual running on the Republican ticket for Senate made this statement: “A house divided cannot stand.” Though politically accurate, he was criticized for being too harsh.
To which Abraham Lincoln responded that he did not pen those words, God did; if they offended someone, he should take it up with the Author. Lincoln lost that Senate race, but he stood firm and eventually won the White House.
We must stand firm in guarding our families with the truth that convinced Lincoln. Power struggles and division cut to the heart of a family. They undermine the very foundation of the marriage relationship to destroy hope and, in many instances, the future of our children. A divided house is a doomed one.
God has given us the ability to choose. Like Joshua of old, we must declare: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). We must recognize the differences between male and female. We must appreciate the strengths that the husband and the wife bring to the marriage relationship. We must acknowledge the fact that God will use a devout spouse to speak His truth and His will to us. Together, we must stand united in the power of His might.
Blessing:
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May your home be as the days of heaven on earth – where both the husband and the wife love God and one another and the children that He gives to them. In Jesus’ name…amen.
