Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?

Even before His death on the cross, Jesus’ followers have looked for the signs that He would return. Jesus described a series of events that would occur – some immediately following His crucifixion, others that would take centuries to develop.

Jesus declared that the Second Temple in Jerusalem would be destroyed, that not one stone would remain atop another. In AD 70, Titus besieged Jerusalem and decimated the Temple and the city, carrying off the holy implements – previously viewed only by the High Priest – to parade them through the streets of Rome.

Jesus assured His disciples that Jerusalem would be trampled by the Gentiles until the Day of the Gentiles was fulfilled. While Israel became a nation in 1948, it did not come into the hands of the Jews until 1967 when Israeli paratroopers stormed the Old City and seized what was taken from them almost two thousand years before.

Here, at the unquestionable end of the age, our eyes are still trained on the sky as we sense His impending return. We are experiencing signs in the skies, the distress of nations, and widespread fear for what the future will bring. The dominoes are stacked. His kingdom is near.

Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May you be found watchful, standing firm in the faith, filled with confidence in the hope of His coming. Hosanna!
