But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Many of us live in a prison that another person has built around us, and we will not reclaim our freedom until we choose to use the master key that Jesus has mandated and modeled for us.

If we are bound by the hurt and pain inflicted by someone else, forgiveness is not optional. The Word of God spells it out clearly. If we do not forgive the trespasses and sins of others against us, our Father will not forgive our trespasses and sins against Him.

The apostle Paul repeats this principle in Ephesians 4:32 when he instructs us to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ’s sake, has forgiven us. He goes on to say that if we have a complaint against another person, even as Christ has forgiven us, we must forgive him also (Colossians 3:13).

Jesus and Paul mandated forgiveness – and modeled it too. Paul suffered for the Gospel – practicing forgiveness along the way and seeing new converts won into the kingdom. Even as Jesus hung on the cross, He cried out to God to forgive His persecutors, the very ones for which He died.

Forgiveness is the key that our Master has provided. We can lay hold of it to turn the lock and walk out freely into His glorious light.
