But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then it shall be that those whom you let remain shall be irritants in your eyes and thorns in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land where you dwell

Joshua and the children of Israel stood on the brink of the Promised Land. The land flowing with milk and honey that God had promised to Abraham spread out before them. And yet…

There towered the walls of Jericho – mighty and intimidating. Joshua did not wish to deal with Jericho, but God made it clear: drive out all of the inhabitants in Canaan. If any were left behind, they would become a barb in their eye and a thorn in their flesh.

Jericho is not a problem that comes out to attack us. Jericho is a problem that shuts itself in and challenges, “Get rid of me if you can!” It is an issue that digs in, prevents us from seeing the goodness of God, impedes our progress, and causes us frustration on a continual basis.

In the same way that Joshua had to confront Jericho, we must address the painful issues that seek to take root in our lives. We must seek God’s face, listen for our marching orders, and obey them fully.

We cannot allow strongholds to diminish our faith walk. Whatever that stubborn situation, it must fall in the face of the God that we know. His victory allows us to forge ahead into the promises that He has waiting.

Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May you march around your Jericho until the walls fall flat. May you embrace every promise spoken by our mighty God. In Jesus’ name…amen.
