Every Christmas Eve, the members of our church are blessed to hear our Worship Pastor sing “O Holy Night.” This has become such a tradition at our church that the thought of a Christmas Eve service without it is, well, hard to imagine!

It’s a well-known song around Christmas, but did you know these interesting tidbits?

On Christmas Eve in 1906, Reginald Fessenden, broadcast the first radio program and played “O Holy Night” on the violin. That makes this Christmas carol the first piece of music to ever be broadcast on radio!
“O Holy Night” originally began as a French poem called “Cantique de Noël.” Written by Placide Cappeau, a wine merchant and poet, when asked by a parish priest to write a Christmas poem. The poem was later set to music in 1847 by Adolphe Adam.

The music is so overpowering in its beauty that we sometimes fail to notice the power of the lyrics. Take a moment this Christmas Eve, to read and reflect on these lyrics. Such a magnificent poem, written so long ago, but whose truth rings true year after year!

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining,

It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.

Long lay the world in sin and error pining,

Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.

A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,

For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angels’ voices!
