Samuel said, “Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams.” – 1 SAMUEL 15:22

Partial obedience is disobedience, and it cost Saul his reign as Israel’s king. God had instructed him to destroy the wicked Amalekites. Instead, Saul stopped short of completing his assignment, even taking as spoils from battle the choicest of goods and livestock. When confronted by God’s prophet Samuel, Saul offered the dubious rationalization that he spared the animals to use as a sacrifice to God. Samuel rebuked Saul, saying, “Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice.”

Obedience matters to God. In fact, Jesus said that we prove our love for Him by obeying His commandments. Are there areas of disobedience in your life? If so, confess them to God, receive His forgiveness through the sacrifice of Christ, and begin a life of obedience today.
