A man’s pride will bring him low, but the humble in spirit will retain honor
Cain’s pride brought him low and left him to wander the earth separated from all that he loved. Instead of humbly responding when God gently rebuked him, he chose a path that led to his downfall.
The story of Cain and Abel is one of the inward soul. When they brought their offerings before the Lord, Genesis tells us that God not only accepted Abel’s sacrifice, He respected him too. For Cain, though, God had no respect, and He rejected his offering. No matter how much you bring to God, He will not be impressed by the gift until He has your heart. What He wants is you!
Cain’s pride was evident in his actions – his jealousy, anger, refusal to repent, the murder of his brother, and his lie to hide it from God. Pride pits people against one another. Like a boa constrictor, it squeezes life from the relationships that it infects.
Pride never tires of broadcasting its own accomplishments. It never fails to exert its superiority. Pride flexes its muscle at the expense of another. Arrogance and self-importance lock arms with pride. It finds its roots deep in self-idolatry.
Like Cain, does pride lurk in your heart? Is it alive in your speech? Is it choking out your relationships and alienating the people you love? Humble yourself before the Lord before pride brings you low.
Blessing:
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. As you humble yourself before God, may He beautify you with salvation, increase your joy, justify and exalt you.
