Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord

To invest our lives in something great, we need look no farther than the children and grandchildren that God has given to us. With the same conviction of Joshua, we must determine: “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

We are accountable to God for the way in which we raise the children with whom He gifted us. God instructed the Jewish fathers to make Him their first priority and then teach His principles to their children.

Many parents hope that their children will simply learn by proximity – that by being near the principles of God, they will adopt them as their own. Faith is not something we learn by proximity; it is learned through practice. Our children follow our example – not our advice.

We must be intentional about their spiritual instruction. We must practice the presence of God and live out His Word ourselves, and we must be diligent to teach our children how to take those reins in their own lives.

This is not a task to be left to Sunday School teachers or professors. God has charged parents with taking their children by the hands and leading them in the steps of the Master. They are our heritage and reward (Psalm 127:3).

Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May God grant you the wisdom to nurture your children in the ways of the Lord. May they grow strong and straight and true – arrows that hit the mark for which He destined them.
