Text: Matthew 9:27-38

27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.

28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord.

29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.

30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.

31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.

32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil.

33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.

34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.

35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;

38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

KEY VERSE: “And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people” (MATTHEW 9:35).

MESSAGE:

David, the son of Jesse, lived more than one thousand and fifty-six years before the coming of Jesus Christ. The gap captures scores of past generations and hundreds of volumes of history books. But that did not stop two blind men desperately seeking healing to reach out to the powerful link between an old order and a new one. In Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, they saw the answer to their challenge. In calling on the Son of David, they were pleading for messianic mercy.

There are two lessons our Lord teaches in granting the blind men’s prayer. First, there are no barriers in the spiritual realm. When we pray to the Father in faraway heaven through the Son, He grants our petition. The results are immediate as today’s passage and countless others in the Bible reveal. Contemporary experiences among believers also prove this. Second, the sightless men’s resort to the messianic title and the miracle that followed show the blessedness of exercising faith in the Messiah.

It was to witness the emergence of “a greater than David”. He would be the very image of the Creator, surpassing all what David stood for. Israel was a limited territory under David. But Jesus the Messiah would reign “from shore to shore”, with no limits on earth and in heaven, because the Father has given Him all power. Today, a grieving world can also benefit from the mercy of the Son of David. We need Him more urgently than the blind men. They ran to Him to deliver them from personal afflictions. Our age needs the Messiah for escape from far worse plagues. Our era’s challenges are spiritual, leading to overwhelming disasters universally. The mission of the Son of David is to deliver a world trapped in the snares of sin, self and Satan. Let the people of the world approach Him for mercy the way the blind men did.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Answers to problems are only a call away on the Son of David.
