REJOICING IN THE SPIRIT

Luke 10:21 (NKJV), Ephesians 5:18-20 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. *And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

There are two basic ways that we can rejoice in the Spirit. The first of them is by rejoicing about spiritual things and the second is rejoicing by the help or influence of the Holy Spirit. Our first text above shows us that Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit. He rejoiced in the Spirit because something spiritual had just happened. God had revealed His word to His people. As a matter of fact, the word that God revealed through Jesus to the disciples was about rejoicing about spiritual things. Jesus told His disciples that instead of rejoicing that they saw evil spirits that were subject to them (as they commanded them out of people), they should rejoice that their names were written in Heaven. They obviously could not see exactly where their names were written in Heaven, but the fact that they could not see it physically did not mean it was not a reality.

It was a reality because of Jesus. In fact, it was this spiritual reality that was responsible for the physical manifestation that they were seeing. Jesus wants us to prioritize spiritual things in our rejoicing and giving thanks. When Paul and Silas were praying and singing at midnight in a prison cell, it was obviously not because of anything physical, (Acts 16:25).

Concerning rejoicing under the influence of the Spirit, many believers do not know that just as they can pray in tongues, they can also sing and give thanks in tongues. In 1Corinthians 14:15-17, Apostle Paul said when you sing in the Spirit, you are giving thanks well. He was referring to doing it in your personal fellowship with God. The first time the Holy Spirit was poured out on the Jews (Acts 2:4 & 11) and on the Gentiles (Acts 10:44-46), the tongues they spoke were to praise and magnify God.

Action Point:
Rejoice in the Spirit right now! Rejoice concerning your spiritual realities and sing in tongues. Declare that you prioritize spiritual things.
