Remember His Works
SEPTEMBER 23, 2020
For You, Lord, have made me glad through Your work; I will triumph in the works of Your hands. O Lord, how great are Your works! Your thoughts are very deep.
Psalm 92:4-5
Recommended Reading: Psalm 143
Journals and diaries have been kept for centuries. Well-known historical figures like England’s Samuel Pepys and the Dutch-German Jewess Anne Frank kept personal records that have been published and read by millions throughout the years.
The psalms of Scripture, in a way, are like David’s (and others’) journals in which they recorded their thoughts, prayers, and praises to God. For example, Psalm 143 records David’s reflections at a time of trouble in his life. In the midst of explaining his needs to God, he says this: “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on the work of Your hands” (verse 5). He is strengthened in his current trial by remembering what God had done for him in the past. And thus the power of a written record of God’s works is demonstrated—it gives a reason to praise Him for the past and trust Him for the future.
When you are calling out to God, let the works of His hands in the past give you hope for the future.
[The] revealed will of God is either manifested to us in his word or in his works.
