Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who spent his life in service to the Lord and in active resistance to Hitler and his Nazi regime.

He was executed in a German concentration camp, and his fervor still calls us to a deeper faith decades later. Bonhoeffer urged Christians to act on their faith: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil; God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

In a society wracked by moral depravity, we must speak and act out of our relationship with Jesus. In Isaiah 58:6-7, God’s heart is revealed. Here is what He longs for His children to do: to break the chains of injustice, to eliminate exploitation, to free the oppressed, and to cancel debts. He longs to see us share our food with the hungry, invite the homeless into our homes, to clothe those with no garments, and to minister to our families.

When we do the things that He desires, He promises that our light will break out like the dawn, our healing and restoration will come quickly, our righteousness will escort us to the peace and prosperity of God, and His glory will bring up the rear guard. When we pray, He will answer with, “Here I am!” (Isaiah 58:8-9).

We cannot delay. Begin to overcome evil with the goodness of God today!

Today’s Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. Do not grow weary of doing good. May you persevere to reap a mighty harvest!
