O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

The tree in the Garden of Eden and the tree on which our Savior died at Calvary represent the power struggle that exists in every human heart – a struggle between right and wrong, between our selfish desires and the truth that sets us free.

Jesus died to give us victory over transgressions, but we slip back into sinful habits like a comfortable, old pair of shoes. Even the apostle Paul engaged in this struggle.

In today’s verses, he confesses that the good things that he wants to do, he fails to deliver. The evil things that he tries to avoid? Those are the practices that plague his steps. He is torn between the tree in the Garden of Eden and the tree at Calvary.

Paul is brutally honest when he admits that there is nothing good inside of him. As the power struggle rages, he recognizes that he is truly wretched, that help only comes from one Source – Jesus Christ!

Jesus bore our sins and the condemnation that comes along with them. We are no longer slaves to sin, destined to do what we once did. Kick off those old sin shoes to come walk in newness of life (Romans 6:4)!

Blessing:

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you and give you His peace. May God fill you with His overcoming ability to do the good that you truly want to do for Him. May you experience His power and might. He will make the crooked paths straight and bring you into courts of victory! In Jesus’ name…amen.
