SALT OR SWORD?

Proverbs 12:18 (KJV, GNB), Colossians 4:6 (KJV), Ephesians 4:29 (GNB) There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health. *Thoughtless words can wound as deeply as any sword, but wisely spoken words can heal. *Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. *Do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed, so that what you say will do good to those who hear you.

What kind of effect does your words have on people? Do your words heal and build? Or do they hurt and kill? God does not want your words to be like a sword that pierces and wounds people. He wants your words to be like salt that brings sweetness, comfort and healing to people. Your words should minister grace to people. You must know child of God, that you have a new tongue right now. When the Bible says we shall speak with new tongues, it is not only talking about praying in the Spirit. Just as we let the Holy Spirit control our tongue when we pray, we must also let Him control our tongues every single time we are talking. You now have the tongue of the learned – the tongue that is led and controlled by the Spirit of God.

You must learn how to control your words, especially when you are provoked. You must also learn to be slow to anger, especially as a leader or as someone that exercises influence over others. “Remember this, my dear friends! Everyone must be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to become angry. Human anger does not achieve God’s righteous purpose,” (James 1:19-20, GNB). Talking about when Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it to give water to the Israelites, the Bible says, “They made him so bitter that he spoke without stopping to think,” (Psa.106:33, GNB). “Parents, don’t come down too hard on your children or you’ll crush their spirits,” (Col.3:21, MSG). The Amplified Classic says, “Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or fret your children [do not be hard on them or harass them], lest they become discouraged and sullen and morose and feel inferior and frustrated. [Do not break their spirit.]”

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I surrender myself to you. Help me to control my temper and help me to control my words. Help me yield to your Spirit always.
