“The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved – you and your household.”– Acts 16: 29-31

Paul and Silas were in prison when suddenly, there was a great earthquake. Immediately, all the doors swung open and everyone’s chains were broken. The guard in charge was filled with fear and arrived in a panic. You see, it was custom that if any prisoner escaped – for any reason- the guard in charge could be executed. You can imagine the feeling of dread that washed over the jailer at the sight of all the prison doors unlocked. Amazingly, however, Paul, Silas, and ALL the prisoners remained.

The astonished guard realized that this was not a natural response and began to recognize something supernatural in Paul and Silas. Convicted of his sin, he asked them, “What must I do to be saved?” Their answer was simple: “Believe in the Lord Jesus.”

What does this mean, exactly – to believe in Jesus?

  1. Believe WHO Jesus is: Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God. He’s God incarnate – fully God and fully man.
  2. Believe what Jesus has DONEJesus came to earth to die on the cross and pay the penalty for our sins. In other words, Jesus came to take the judgment that we deserve for our sins and in return, offer us eternal life with God.
  3. Believe IN Jesus to SURRENDER control: This means voluntarily giving control of your life to Jesus. You’re saying, “Jesus, I’m willing to submit to You – to Your values, Your guidance and Your plan. I believe IN You.”

Do you believe in Jesus? Just like the jailer, you, too, can experience salvation through Jesus Christ.
