Memorise: And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. 1 Corinthians 9:25
BIBLE READING: 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
Bible Reading In One Year: Psalms 136-138; 1 Corinthians 9:1-27
MESSAGE:
Self-control which is a fruit of the Holy Spirit means moderation in ones appetite and passions. It is very important for a child of God, particularly anyone that wants to be used by God to have self-control. In our walk with God, there is always a battle between the flesh and the Spirit. The flesh likes comfort, it likes to be pampered and if one listens to the dictates of the flesh, the Spirit will not bear its fruit.
For instance, the flesh likes good food and wants to be fed at all times. Fasting is necessary for us to grow in the Holy Spirit. Believe me, there are some breakthroughs that cannot be gotten except we fast and pray (Mark 9:29).
The flesh likes to sleep all through the night, but then, it is good to set out time to pray in the night. The flesh will want to make you spend money lavishly on worthless things just to prove that you are from a rich home, but then, that is not an attribute of a child of God. Self-control is needed to make a headway in every aspect of ones life. It will help one to exercise control over emotions and every part of the body that needs to be subject to the Holy Spirit.
Prayer Point:
Holy Spirit, please help me to subject my emotions and body to your leadings.
Hymn: Take My Life, And Let It Be
- Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in ceaseless praise. - Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love;
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee. - Take my voice and let me sing
Always, only for my King;
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee. - Take my silver and my gold
Not a mite would I withhold;
Take my intellect and use
Every power as Thou shalt choose. - Take my will and make it
Thine It shall be no longer mine;
Take my heart, it is Thine own
It shall be Thy royal throne. - Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.
