SING UNTO THE LORD A NEW SONG

Psalms 103:1-5, Lamentations 3:22-23 Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s. *It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

When last did you sing a new song unto the Lord? A new song is not just a song that someone recently composed. It is a song that is stirred up in your heart because of your understanding of what God has done for you. You can actually compose your own songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. It does not always have to sound in a certain way or rhyme and have nice verses. All that matters is that it is from your heart and it is about what God has done for you.

Some believers do not know how to sing and rejoice when they are alone. They only sing and rejoice when they are in a church service or amongst other believers. Every time God does something for you, you need to sing unto God and rejoice from your heart about it. Psalms 98:1 says, “O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.” In Exodus 15:1-19, we see the elaborate song Moses and the Israelites sang to God after He delivered them from the Red Sea and the army of Pharaoh. They sang about what had just happened and how God had delivered them miraculously and they called God wonderful names.

Sing of God’s goodness and sing about His mercies. The goodness of God refers to the good things we experience and the mercies of God speak of the negative things we were saved from. There are things that could have consumed, overwhelmed or hindered you in one way or the other but God in His mercy did not allow them to happen. David said bless the Lord O my soul and forget not ALL His benefits. Do not leave anything out. Sing about big things and sing about small things. Sing and rejoice about everything that God does for you.

Action Point:
Think of God’s goodness or mercy that you have experienced and let a joyful song of praise and gratitude flow from your heart to God right now.
