I will give them one heart [a new heart] and I will put a new spirit within them; and I will take the stony [unnaturally hardened] heart out of their flesh, and will give them a heart of flesh [sensitive and responsive to the touch of their God].— Ezekiel 11:19 (AMPC)
Before we accepted Christ, our hearts were too hardened to be led by the Holy Spirit, but now that God has given us new, tender hearts, we can follow His loving guidance (see Matthew 11:28-30).
God has made us sensitive to His touch and wants to lead us to do things that are good for us (like spending time with Him), but He doesn’t want us to turn our devotional time into a law—like believing we have to pray for fifteen minutes, read our Bible for twenty minutes, and speak the Word out loud for ten minutes, or follow some other formula every day in order to please Him. As soon as we start seeing things as laws and rules, all the joy is drained out of them and they become just another work of the flesh—exhausting effort that gets us nowhere.
I want to encourage you today to keep a tender heart. Let God lead you in your daily walk with Him, and you’ll never be bored. The Holy Spirit is the most creative person ever, and He’ll help you keep your devotional time fresh and exciting!
Prayer Starter: Father, please lead me in everything I do today, especially my time with You. Help me keep a tender heart, and not to think of everything as a law or a rule. Thank You for giving me the ability to enjoy each moment. In Jesus’ Name, amen
