HYMN: S, S & S 237, “Rock of Ages”

INTRODUCTION :

When, in awesome wonder, we consider all the works that our Lord God Almighty and Creator has done, thanksgiving with praise will erupt from our inner man. The
Psalmist in robust language elaborately praised God. The. word praise is used 13 times in Psalms 150. It tells us to praise
God everywhere for his acts of power and greatness; why we should praise God and how we should praise Him
with different instruments, how to dance and who/what should praise Him; and he
Commands everything that has breath to praise God. In the Old Testament, the
people praised God with dance, instruments, clapping, etc, each time God gave them victory. In the New Testament, there are examples of praises to God; Matt. 8:2 narrates how
a leper worshipped Jesus and got cleansed while one leper out of the ten returned to give thanks to the LORD in Luke 17:15. In this study, we shall
consider the meaning of thanksgiving, why and how we should give thanks as we individually answer the question, “how grateful am I”?

BIBLE TRUTH:

Q1. EXPLAIN THE PHRASE THANKSGIVING OF PRAISE.
The literal meaning of the word thanksgiving is an expression of
gratitude. It is a way wherein an individual shows his/her heartfelt
appreciation to God. The word praise is from the Latin word “pretium which is “price or value”. Praise can be offered with an improper motive but true praise is a Sincere acknowledgement of a
conviction of worth; the level/amount of praise depend on the value we place on the subject/object of praise. This is because praise could be for a man, object or God. In this discuss our focus is on God. Thanksgiving of praise therefore is an expression of gratitude to God, demonstrating the value we place on Him. It is not a “one-off thing;” it
Ought to be the believer’s life-style.
At a specific time of the year, different congregations come together on an agreed date to express gratitude to God in thanksgiving. Un-thankfulness is a sign of the end times (2 Tim 2:3) and believers should guide against this.

Q2. WHY SHOULD WE OFFER THANKSGIVING OF PRAISE?
2Tim 2:1-3; Psalm 107:1-2, 22;
100: 1-5; 103: 1-7; 1 Thess 5:18.

Some reasons why we should give
thanks are as follows:

  • Because of who He is.
  • He is good, kind, merciful and
    faithful to us.
  • He has redeemed us from the hands
    of the enemy..

-It is an opportunity to declare the
works of God with rejoicing.

-For His mercies we enjoy are
everlasting and His truth endures
forever.

-For all the benefits the Lord has
bestowed on us.

-For the healing of our sicknesses
and diseases.

-For forgiving our sins.

-For delivering us from destruction.

-For renewing our lives.

-For executing judgment for the
oppressed.

  • It Is a command. Q3. FROM THE FOLLOWING
SCRIPTURES EXPLAIN THE AWESOME POWER OF PRAISE TO GOD .* 2 Chron
    20:20-30, Acts 16:22-34.
The power of praise cannot be over
    emphasized. when Israel sang and
    praised God; God set ambushments
    against the children of Ammon.
They helped to destroy one another,
    that none escaped, Israel rejoiced
    having peace, quietness and rest
round about. The major power released by praise is victory over enemies, having peace and rest from the Lord, even in the midst of the storm. In Joshua 6, Israel praised God and the walls of Jericho fell
down. In Acts 16:22-34, Paul and Silas
prayed and sang praises unto God in
the prison. Unlike what is expected
in situations of this nature where they should be mourning and complaining, they turned that situation around. Praise has the power to open prison doors, break loose chains and fetters. Indeed,
praise has the ability to do much more than we can imagine. Q4. HOW DO WE OFFER ACCEPT ABLE ” THANKSGIVING OF PRAISE” Rom 12:1: Psalm 95:1-2; 149:3; 2 Corinth 9:6, 7; 2 Sam 24:24; Psalm 150:3-6; Mt 21:16,
    8:2; Ps 107; Heb. 13:15; Deut. 17:1.

It is good to offer acceptable

“thanksgiving of praise” because it
attracts God’s presence and blessings. The starting point is to learn to appreciate our fellow men for even their little acts of kindness to us as we appreciate the LORD. We must maintain our bodies as God’s temple, a living sacrifice holy and acceptable unto Him as our act of worship. God needs to accept our person first, before our offering. The act of living a holy life separated from sin unto God is a paramount way of offering thanksgiving of praise. Singing unto the Lord is another way to offer thanksgiving of praise. In addition, the believer should
dance before the Lord; using musical instruments in praise to Him.
We must give our substance generously in offering a thanksgiving of praise: this should be devoid of compulsion, pressure, manipulation and hypocrisy. Such a thanksgiving of praise must also be done cheerfully without complains
or grudges. The substance we offer
to God in thanksgiving of praise must be very valuable. To this extent, an acceptable offering must be without blemish and “evil-favouredness”, which is
abomination unto the Lord. God abhors sacrifices that are not pure, which will include, ill-gotten wealth. The value we place on God and all He has done to us and for us, should be reflected in the substance we offer. The place of worship cannot be over emphasized giving thanksgiving of praise. The fruit of
our lips is another way we are to offer thanksgiving of praise.

Q5. WHO SHOULD GIVE THANKS? Mt 21:16, Psalm 150:6.
Everything that has breath should give thanks to the LORD, no one is exempted.

Q6. WHEN SHOULD WE GIVE A THANKSGIVING OF PRAISE?
In all situations we should give thanks whether it is convenient or not. At cheerful times and in difficult times give thanks. We should also thank God in
acknowledgement of His mighty acts (Exodus 15) and for His deliverance. (Phil 4:6; 1 Thess 5:18)

Q7. WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF GIVING THANKS OF PRAISE ?
Solomon gave so much, that God
visited him at night,so giving could
provoke God’s visitation. There is
peace, joy and satisfaction from
obeying and pleasing God. God is
pleased with such an individual; he
could enjoy wholeness on all sides,
untold blessings and God’s presence.

DAILY LIVING APPLICATION :
Let us think about all God has done
for us individually and not forget all
His benefits. We should thank and
praise Him; for “praise is comely”
(Psalm 147:1c)

MEMORY VERSE : (PSALM 107:15, 16)
“Oh that men would praise the Lord
for his goodness and his wonderful
works to the children of men! For He
hath broken the gates of brass, and
cast the bars of iron in sunder”
