The Attitude of Gratitude: A Prayer of Blessing
NOVEMBER 28, 2020
Praise the Lord! Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Psalm 106:1
Recommended Reading: Psalm 106:1-5
Martin Rinkart was a Lutheran minister who ministered in Saxony, Germany, during the Thirty Year’s War and plague of the 1600s. All around him was death and despair. To sustain his spirits and those of his people, he wrote a powerful hymn of thanksgiving. It may be the only known hymn to include the word “perplexed,” for in the second stanza, Rinkart prayed, “O may this bounteous God… keep us in his grace and guide us when perplexed.”
Here is the first stanza. Why not sing or say it as a prayer of gratitude to the Lord today?
Now thank we all our God
With heart and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom his world rejoices;
Who from our mother’s arms
Has blessed us on our way
With countless gifts of love,
And still is ours today.
Thankfulness is a soil in which pride does not easily grow.
