The Cleansing Power of God’s Word 2

James 1:21 (NKJV, LB, GNB)
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. *So get rid of all that is wrong in your life, both inside and outside, and humbly be glad for the wonderful message we have received, for it is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts. *So get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that he plants in your hearts, which is able to save you.

Our attitude to God’s word is very important. The way we value and receive God’s word determines the kind of effect and fruit that it will have in our lives (Matt.13:23). The first attitude we must have towards God’s word is to earnestly desire it. The Bible says, “Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow tIhereby” (1 Peter 2:1-2, NKJV). You must desire God’s word more than a little baby desire milk. Desire to grow and be more like Christ by feeding on God’s word.

Study and meditate on God’s word so that you can thoroughly FILL your heart with it. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly (Col.3:16). Spend quality time to studying God’s word and be deliberate about being focused when studying. Give your eyes to God’s word often and keep it alive and fresh in your heart (Prov.4:20-21). Let the word of God occupy your thoughts more than popular trends, news or happenings on social media. Keep thinking about God’s word and from time to time, remind yourself of what you studied and meditated on. The Bible declares, “I have thought much about your words and stored them in my heart so that they would hold me back from sin” (Psa.119:11, LB).

Our second text above assures us that God’s word is able to save our souls as it takes hold of our hearts. Give yourself so much to God’s word until it takes over your consciousness and your entire being. Be meek and humble towards it. Accept and believe what God’s word says about you and be willing to think, pray, talk and practise or act in line with God’s word (James 1:22-25).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I desire to grow and be more like Christ as your word fills my heart. Help me to fill my heart with your word till it takes over me.
