The Cleansing Power of God’s Word

Ephesians 5:25-26 (NLT), John 15:3, Psalms 119:9 (NIV & AMP)
For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word. *Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. *How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. *How shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed and keeping watch [on himself] according to Your word [conforming his life to it].

In Christ, God has not only made provision for us to receive His mercy and forgiveness if we sin. God has also made provision for us to be purified and cleansed from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We experience this purification and cleansing as we give ourselves to God’s word. 1 John 1:6-7 says, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.” It is the revelation of the blood or the things Jesus did for us by His death, burial and resurrection that cleanses us from all sin.

Meditation on God’s word is a major part of our fellowship with God. Just as light helps us to see so we can walk or move well, the revelation of God’s word helps us to walk in God’s ways. When a person is walking, he or she is moving or making progress along a certain part. As we walk or live by the influence of God’s light (word), we become more like God in all our ways. This must be our utmost desire.

God’s word is alive and sharper than a double-edged sword (Heb.4:12). It can penetrate into our souls and spirits and cut out everything that is not supposed to be there. As we meditate on the word of God, our minds are constantly being renewed and our lives are constantly being transformed (Rom.12:2). As this happens, we progressively put on the new man (Col.3:10). The Bible refers to the new man as righteous and holy just like God (Eph.4:24). The new man is Christ (Rom.13:14). The word of God helps us to put on Christ. When you believe in the cleansing power of God’s word, you will give yourself more to His word.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I desire to experience the cleansing power of your word in my life. Help me to give myself more and more to your word.
