The Depths of His Love: His Heart Broke for the Lost

APRIL 9, 2022

But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd.
Matthew 9:36

 Recommended Reading: Psalm 23

In some mountainous regions of Europe, cattle can be driven into the high pastures in the spring where they will graze unattended. Not so for flocks of sheep. Wherever sheep are found, there will be a shepherd. Sheep are small and vulnerable and prone to wander. In the biblical culture, where sheep were numerous, the image of sheep and shepherds was often employed.

In John 10, Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd of those who followed Him—and spoke of that relationship in intimate terms. This was a counterpoint to Ezekiel 34 where God rebuked the leaders of Israel for failing to care for His “flock.” It’s no wonder, then, that when Jesus looked out over the Jewish people “He was moved with compassion for them.” They were tired and lost, like sheep without a shepherd.

Jesus demonstrates the depths of His love by His compassion for lost souls. If you feel lost, know He is seeking you. If you do know Him today, be assured He watches over you.

For some, our greatest ability seems to be to get away from the Shepherd.
