THE EXPECTATION OF JESUS

*Hebrews 10:12-14, Ephesians 1:22-23 (GNB), John 20:21 (GNB)

But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. *God put all things under Christ’s feet and gave him to the church as supreme Lord over all things. The church is Christ’s body, the completion of him who himself completes all things everywhere. *Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you.”

Having successfully accomplished our redemption by His sacrifice on the Cross, Jesus sat down with an expectation. He is looking forward to something. He is looking forward to the time when His enemies will be made His footstool. A footstool is a device upon which you rest your leg. For someone’s enemy to be made his footstool means for him to have absolute dominion and victory over that enemy. It is like when there is a fight between two people and after one wins, he puts his leg on the one that was defeated. The Bible tells us that after Goliath went down, David ran to where he was and stood upon him, (1Sam.17:51). Goliath was made David’s foot stool.

How therefore do the enemies of Jesus become His footstool? The enemies of Jesus will be made His footstool when the church (the Body of Christ) is able to exercise absolute victory and dominion over everything that Jesus has won victory and dominion over. This is the greatest expectation that Jesus has right now. God put everything under Christ’s feet and we are His Body. He is the Head and we are the Body. As the Head, He has defeated and exercised victory and dominion over the devil and every evil that came with the fall of man. Now, He wants the rest parts of His Body to exercise absolute victory over the devil and all evil. Based on the superior work of redemption that Christ accomplished for us, He has great expectations from us. He has invested His life into us and He expects a great return or yield from our lives. He expects us to go into all the world and preach the gospel and make disciples of all nations. Jesus expects us to grow into His fullness to spread His victory and influence in every sphere of life and society. He has given us His life and all that we need to do all this.
Prayer Focus:
Thank God that Christ has overcome the devil. Pray that we will grow in the fullness of Christ and manifest His victory and dominion.
