“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14

Grace and Truth – the Gospel summed up in two words. Imagine you get pulled over by a cop for speeding. YOU know you were going way too fast, and the cop and his speed gun have the PROOF. The TRUTH is that you’re guilty, but GRACE is the cop letting you go without a ticket and him paying your fine. This is the Gospel – only replace a couple of hundred dollars fine with eternity separated from God. That’s why God sent Jesus, to point out in TRUTH the tangled mess sin weaves in our lives and to extend grace by willingly paying the penalty for that sin through death on the cross.
The Word became flesh and Jesus, the Son of God, God-incarnate, came to earth in the form of a weak, defenseless baby. This baby – the King of kings and Lord of lords – wasn’t born into the lap of luxury. No, He was born into obscurity in a cave or outdoor covering for animals. And yet, this baby would become a teacher, healer, and ultimately mankind’s Savior as He went to the cross – an innocent man – offering us forgiveness and victory over sin.
Far too often “Christians” sway too far one way or the other: all grace but no truth, or all truth but no grace. Jesus demonstrated the perfect balance between the two. Grace and Truth. This is the Gospel. This is Jesus. And this is the reason we celebrate Christmas. How will you share the gift of grace with others this Christmas season?
