THE GLORIOUS UNITY OF THE EARLY CHURCH (1)

ACTS 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house … And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Unity played a very great role in the foundation and growth of the early church. In obedience to the instruction of Jesus in Luke 24:49, the disciples continued to gather together to pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Unlike the people who were trying to build the tower in Genesis 11, their gathering here was not born out of mere human ambition or any other selfish desire. It was born out of God’s leading and purpose for their lives.

Beyond just gathering together in one place, they were also united and of one heart as they gathered. The phrase, ‘with one accord’ used in our text above, means they were ‘unanimous in mind’ and ‘of the same passion’. They were in agreement and alignment with themselves for God’s will and purpose for their lives. Real unity starts from the inside.

The disciples’ unity in prayers and God’s will led to the outpouring of the Spirit as God had promised them and this also led to the salvation of many lives. Unity enhances the move of God’s Spirit amongst us. While God had to confuse the language of those in Genesis 11, to stop what they were doing, in Acts 2, God enabled them to speak the language of others to enhance His will and advance His Kingdom, (Acts 2:11). It was all about God and not themselves
