“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 KJV
Every new covenant believer must be grounded in the revelation that righteousness is a gift. You do not work nor labour for it. It is a gift. When somebody gives you a gift, you don’t labour for it. You don’t say what can I do for you before you give me the gift. You simply receive the gift.
Christ knew no sin! He was sinless and without blemish. And God decided to make Him become sin for us. He became sin because of us. Sin tied you down! Sin said you will not have a scholarship. Sin said that you will not be married. Sin said what killed your father will kill you. Sin said if you drive that car it will be involved in an accident. So, God made Christ to be sin for us that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. He made him be sin for us that the power of sin over us may be broken forever. He took our sins and we took His righteousness. Now that you have been made righteous, the Bibles tell you: “Awake to righteousness, and sin not…” (1 Corinthians 15:34 KJV). You should become righteousness conscious. That is what it means to be awake. That should be your consciousness, not sin. When you are awake to your real self, sin will no longer be attractive to you. Sin consciousness will defeat you because when you are approaching God with sin consciousness, you will be afraid. You will think He is going to kill you. Sin consciousness is going to cause your mouth to be closed. When you are in prayer you won’t have boldness because the devil specializes in making you have sin consciousness, Do we fall into sin? Yes! But falling into sin does not make you a sinner. You are still righteous. So, when you fall into sin, remind yourself that you are the righteousness of God in Christ. Get up, dust yourself and move on.
