THE GREAT IMPORTANCE OF HOLINESS
2Timothy 2:19-21, 1John 3:3 (GNB) .. The Lord knoweth them that are his. …Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. And, in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour. If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. *Everyone who has this hope in Christ keeps himself pure, just as Christ is pure.

Holiness is the expression and practice of the life and nature of God that we have received by our faith in Jesus. Holy living is an important part of pleasing God and preparing ourselves to fulfil God’s will for our lives. Like our text above says, holiness makes us prepared and available for God to use us for His highest purposes. Sin destroys and sin is a distraction. It can turn your heart away from God. Continuing in sin can distract a believer from fulfilling God’s will. What do you think would have happened, if Joseph decided to give in to the temptation from Potiphar’s wife? He may not have known it, but that very little and temporary pleasure, could have made him miss out on becoming the Prime Minister of Egypt and a lot of people around the world would have died from famine, because there would have been no one to interpret Pharaoh’s dream and save the resources of Egypt the way God wanted Joseph to.
Instead of enjoying the temporal pleasures of sin, Moses chose rather to suffer affliction with the people of God and he valued suffering for Christ more than all the riches of Egypt, (Heb.11:24-26). Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself and God promoted him and used him mightily, (Dan.1:8-21). Sin can make a believer’s heart cold and hardened towards God, (Matt.24:12). Sin can make a believer’s conscience become seared, (1Tim.4:2). Sin can make a believer bring shame to the name of God and the gospel of Christ. Holiness on the other hand, honours God. Holiness, does not only prepare us to fulfil God’s will for our lives, it is a major way by which we prepare for the coming of Jesus; when our physical bodies will be changed into glorified bodies just like that of Jesus, (1John 3:3). This is the hope that our second text above is referring to.
Prayer:
Dear Father, I desire to honour you and please you by living a holy life. Help me to keep my eyes on the coming of Jesus and your purpose for my life.
