Let’s face it, no matter how hard we try, all of us will rationalize all sorts of bad decisions. As my dad said many times, “For many people today, there is no such thing as sin; everything is explainable.” But the Holy Spirit cuts right through this nonsense.
The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to convict us of our sin. Now, this might not sound like a “gift” at first glance, but conviction is God’s way of letting us know that we’re wandering off the right path. It’s a way to direct our steps, protect us, and help guide us to where we need to go.
When we’re not in close relationship with God, the Holy Spirit uses the sharing or preaching of the Word of God to convict and open our eyes to our need for God’s forgiveness and salvation in Christ Jesus. For the Jesus follower, the Holy Spirit dwells within us to highlight when we sin and when our lives become out of alignment with God’s will. This conviction lets us know we need to get things right with God.
The Holy Spirit is there to convict us – not out of anger or disappointment, but out of love. God’s conviction is rooted in His love, because He wants the very best for our lives. How can I be so sure? “For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).Subscribe
