The Importance of God’s Word in Knowing and Doing His Will

Hebrews 10:7, Psalms 139:16 (CEV), Romans 12:2 (GNB), Psalms 119:105 (GNB)
Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God. *but with your own eyes you saw my body being formed.
Even before I was born, you had written in your book everything I would do. *Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God — what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect. *Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.

At the early age of twelve, Jesus stayed back in the temple to listen to the reading of the scriptures and to ask questions (Luke 2:46). Much later, when he was faced with fierce temptations from the devil, it was by God’s word that He persistently overcame (Matt.4:1:11). In the Good News Bible, our first text above says, “Then I said, ‘Here I am, to do your will, O God, just as it is written of me in the book of the Law.’ ” Jesus was willing to do God’s will and He knew that the only way He could do so was by aligning Himself with what God had said about Him.

To know and do God’s will, we must give priority to the study and application of God’s word to our lives. In our second text above, David said everything about his life was written in God’s book. It is the same with our lives. The word of God reveals the mind and will of God. As we study and fill ourselves with God’s word, our minds are renewed and our lives are transformed. We become more like Christ and we are able to know and di God’s will for our lives. The scriptures equip us for good works (2Tim.3:16-17).

The Holy Spirit is always willing to guide us into all truth and show us things to come (John 16:13). Everything the Holy Spirit will reveal to you will always be in line with what God has said in His word. This is why you must study and know the word of God yourself. If Jesus Himself had to study the scriptures while He was on earth, then we do as well. Peter describes the scriptures as a more sure word of prophecy from which we can receive God’s light for every dark situation in our lives (2Pet.1:19).

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, as I fill myself with your word, I ask that you reveal your mind to me and empower me to accomplish it. Help me to study your word more.
