The Object of Faith

NOVEMBER 11, 2020

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Mark 9:23
Mark 9:23

 Recommended Reading: Matthew 17:14-22

Modern references to “Ponzi schemes” refer to the fraudulent investment plan started by Charles Ponzi in the 1920s. He promised unrealistic rates of return—and succeeded for over a year—by paying initial investors with money from new investors instead of from actual profits from investments. In all such swindles, the victims have absolute faith that the conman will be true to his promises.

Such swindles reveal the most important truth about faith: More important than the amount of faith is the trustworthiness of the object of the faith. A lot of faith in a liar produces terrible results, but even small faith in a truthful person yields guaranteed results. When a man approached Jesus about healing his demon-possessed son, he asked Jesus if He could heal him. In other words, he had little confidence in Jesus. But Jesus reminded the man that faith in the real thing will always be rewarded. Putting one’s faith in Jesus guarantees His attention and His response.

If you have a need today, put your confidence in Jesus, not in the amount of your faith. He can reward even the tiniest amount of trust (Matthew 17:20).

A little faith is faith, as a spark of fire is fire.
