THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING-1

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the month of August! This month, we shall be examining The Power of Positive Thinking. As a youth, it is important to know that your thought pattern goes a long way in determining the direction of your life.

The journey of life is a marathon, not a sprint. The length of a race determines the input channelled into it to make it a pleasurable and impactful one. The Bible says: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee (Proverbs 23:7). Thoughts can either be positive or negative in nature. Do you know that the words we speak are linked to the thoughts in our hearts? In the beginning, before the world was formed, God had everything that needed to be put in place in His mind, but all of this did not come to fulfilment until He spoke the words. So, we are products of our thoughts.

Positive thoughts are also referred to as good thoughts, and they are productive and helpful in nature. The Word says: Finally, my friends, keep your minds on whatever is true, pure, right, holy, friendly, and proper. Don’t ever stop thinking about what is truly worthwhile and worthy of praise(Philippians 4:8 CEV).On the other hand, negative thoughts are referred to as evil thoughts. They are destructive and the end result is sorrow, pain and death. As it is written: For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies (Matthew 15:19 KJV).Therefore, don’t ever allow just any thoughts into your mind, keep thy heart with all diligence (Proverbs 4:23).

Words are potent, and they are like arrows; when shot, they don’t miss their targets. In the same vein, when unclean thoughts go through the mind, if it is not driven out, it has the potency of bringing to pass the very act, and that is a sin against God. A wise man has rightly said, ‘A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth’.

Thoughts are strongholds, especially if they are not tamed. So many people have been held captive by their thoughts, and that is why it is necessary to always filter negative thoughts from our hearts. It is a known fact that sweet oranges and bitter ones cannot grow on the same tree. So also, positive and negative thoughts cannot dwell together, one will overpower the other. Ben Carson grew up in a dysfunctional home, but his mother fed him with positive words, which formed his thought pattern.

Examples of men and women in scriptures who believed in possibilities and saw God’s supernatural hand backing up their faith include, Noah-the ark project, Abraham-the birth of Isaac, Esther-the deliverance of her people (the Jews), Moses-the deliverance of the children of Israel, Joshua-the triumphant entry of the Israelites into the promised land and Mary (mother of Jesus)-she believed in God’s power to conceive the messiah. In our contemporary world, there are several examples of men who believed in possibilities; they dared the impossibility, and they invented things that are of value till date. Some of them are, Michael Faraday-Electricity, Thomas Edison-Light Bulb, Johannes Gutenberg-Printing press, Wilber and Orville Wright-Aeroplane and Charles Darwin-Evolution.

Therefore, it is important to know that God has great plans for us, but our attitudes and choices go a long way in determining if these great thoughts will come to pass. This is why we need the help of the Holy Spirit because only those born of the spirit have access to these thoughts God has (Jeremiah 29:11). However, salvation is fundamental in gaining access. So, if you are not born again, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.
