THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING-2

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the concluding part of this teaching. I believe you were blessed by the last edition. In this second part, we shall be examining the effects of negative and positive thoughts, and how positive habits can influence positive thoughts. However, before you continue reading, I will like you to get a piece of paper and a pen, and then list three things you are grateful to God for. A wise man said, ‘Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them is the true measure of our thanksgiving’.

Take note of the following:

  • Demeaning thoughts of oneself have a way of hindering one from seeing what God has done. Because you do not see the things God has done, you keep casting your mind on what is yet to be done. So, you need to look beyond what is happening and keep a record of what God has done or is doing in your life or around you (Psalm 103:3). This will keep the enemy of discouragement at bay.
  • Inferiority complex is also one of the effects of negative thoughts. This is synonymous with profound self-doubt. In your basic years in school, you could have been sneered at or named ‘dullard’, and so, you carry this as baggage everywhere. Many failed when they were in elementary school, but they did not stay in the mud of failure; they rose to become the best student in their class or among the top best. An example of this is Ben Carson (one-time best neurosurgeon in the world).
  • Suicide is also one of the effects of negative thoughts. This may occur when one feels life has nothing else to offer after all failed attempts at success, break-ups in relationships and long overdue debt. Studies have shown that youths are vulnerable to suicidal ideation as a result of not being able to weigh the pros and cons of issues. Most of these young ones do not confide in anyone, they just take irrational decisions, thereby leaving their family members with unanswered questions.
  • Threats of exposure on social media for nude pictures taken in ignorance or due to peer pressure are a norm these days.

Victims either give in to the pressure of their captors or see suicide as the only exit.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, positive thoughts are to be full of hope and confidence. A wise man has rightly said that if you can stay positive in a negative situation, you win. This makes you see solutions to every challenge or situation that stares you in the face. Positive thoughts begin with making positive comments about yourself and others.Positive habits lead to positive thoughts.

Some healthy habits to develop as a youth includes:

  • Meditate on God’s Word when you wake up and before going to Bed(Psalm 139:2; Joshua 1:8).
  •  Absolute faith in God and His Word (Psalm119:97).
  • Always keep a positive and happy company(Proverbs 13:20).
  • Cultivate a habit of living in God’s Presence (Psalm 16:11).
  • Speak the right words no matter what the situation might be(Proverbs 13:3; Ephesians 4:2).
  • See failure as another opportunity to make the right decision and be the best in any Venture(Proverbs 24:16).Thomas Edison, an inventor who made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When asked how he felt about failing a thousand times, he said, ‘I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps’.
  • Avoid comparison with others, especially your peers (2 Corinthians 10:12; Galatians 1:10).
  • Identify your talents, gifts and the things you are good at and work on how to develop yourself in areas that are a source of concern (Proverbs 22:29;1 Peter 4:10).
  • Seek godly counsel (Proverbs 11:14).

It is an established truth that where your treasure is, is where your thought is patterned after. If you set affection on the things of the world, which are corrupt in nature, it will lead to regrets, especially when you do not get the desired results (Colossians 3:2). However, when your affection is set on what is listed above, you enjoy strength beyond your abilities because God will work in you and through you (Philippians 2:13).

Many people have misplaced their priorities, and this has led them to do things that do not glorify God. If you are in this category, and you are ready to start afresh with God, please say this prayer of faith: Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner, and I cannot help myself. Forgive me of my sins and cleanse me with Your Precious Blood. Deliver me from sin and satan to serve the Living God. From today, Lord Jesus, I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus for saving me! Now, I am Born Again.
