THE PROPER FOUNDATION OF OUR SERVICE UNTO GOD
1Thessalonians 1:2-3 (GNB), Hebrews 6:9-10 (TPT) We always thank God for you…and always mention you in our prayers. For we remember…how you put your faith into practice, how your love made you work so hard, and how your hope in … Jesus…is firm.…beloved, we are fully convinced that there are more beautiful and excellent things, which flow from your salvation. For God, the Faithful One, is not unfair. How can he forget the work you have done for him? He remembers the love you demonstrate as you continually serve his beloved ones for the glory of his name.*

Our relationship with God is more important than our service unto God. However, if we truly have a relationship with God, there is no way we will not want to serve Him. Our service unto God flows out of our relationship with God. Jesus said many will say unto Him that they prophesied, cast out devils and did many wonderful works in His name, but He will say unto them, “I never knew you, depart from me you worker of iniquity,” (Matt.7:22-23). They ‘never’ had a relationship with Jesus, yet they were serving and doing things in His name. All they did will end up as nothing before God, because they did not have a relationship with God.
God wants our service unto Him to flow out of our love for Him. God does not want us to serve Him because of what we want from Him. Jesus has already paid for everything we want from God. When you are serving God because of what you want from Him, you are telling God that all Jesus did for you was inferior or not enough. God will remember and He will bless and reward us for our labour and service unto Him, but what God will not forget is your work and labour of love. Not the work and labour you were doing as a way of sowing seeds so that you can deserve, receive or earn anything from Him. Or so you can get any title or ranking among people. God sees our hearts and He knows our motives. Without love, all our spiritual gifts and physical sacrifices are nothing before God, (1Cor.13:1-3). We love God because He first loved us, (1John 4:19). As you fill your heart with the revelation of God’s abundant love for you in Christ, the love of God will naturally flow from your heart to God and it will fuel your labour and service unto Him. This is God’s desire for us.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, please fill my heart with the revelation of your abundant love for me and let your love fuel every act of service I render to you.
