THE REAL REASON PEOPLE PRAY AMISS

James 4:1-3 (NKJV)

Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.

The reason some believers are afraid that they may pray amiss is because they don’t understand what James was communicating in our text above. The real reason James described some believers as praying amiss was because those believers were amiss. Their lives were way out of line with the will and way of Christ. Do you notice the type of characters he said they possessed? They were always at war, fighting, coveting and even committing murder! James was not talking about believers who sometimes fall into sin. These believers had fully given themselves to these evil ways of life. In the next verse, James said “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

Because of their way of life, they didn’t even like to pray. And when they prayed at all, they prayed amiss. When believers are amiss, they will pray amiss.

Some of the words used to explain the original Greek word for amiss in this verse are: depraved, evil and wicked. These believers were not walking in love and their prayers were lustful and selfish prayers aimed at either showing off or making others hurt or envious of them.

Prayer:
Dear Father, I thank you that I always pray in line with your will, because your Spirit helps me live in line with your will for my life.
