THE RELEVANCE OF SCRIPTURE IN A MODERN WORLD
December 02, 2024
From a sermon by Bryant Wright, Founder, RFTH
“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.“
Hebrews 4:12
Today, many view the Bible as outdated and irrelevant to contemporary life.
The notion that the Bible is “just an ancient book of ancient men” reflects a common skepticism among young adults who, influenced by secular education, may question the validity and application of scriptural teachings. This skepticism is not new; it has existed as long as the Bible itself. Yet, understanding it’s unique nature as divinely inspired can transform our perception to everyday relevance.
Despite being written over 1600 years by approximately 40 different writers, the Bible presents a unified message of redemption and hope through the work of one author, The Holy Spirit. It’s not just an historical document or a compilation of moral guidelines but a living text that reveals God’s redeeming love to us.
Engaging with the Bible authentically requires addressing difficult passages and seeming contradictions, which is not only an intellectual exercise but a spiritual one. When doubts arise, rather than dismissing them, take them as opportunities to doubt your doubts by asking God for understanding. If you encounter questions you can’t answer, see it as a chance to learn and grow in your faith versus dismissing God and faith. This approach not only strengthens personal faith but also prepares us to address the questions of others with honesty and humility.
Hebrews 4:12 describes the Word of God as “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” This imagery suggests that the Bible penetrates deep into our hearts and minds, challenging our preconceptions and exposing our true intentions. Whether it brings comfort, conviction, or a call to action, the Bible remains relevant by addressing the core of human experience – our need for salvation and faith in God’s redeeming love through Jesus.
In embracing the Bible’s teachings, we find timeless wisdom applicable to modern issues such as relationships, ethics, and personal fulfillment. It offers a foundation for building a life that is personally satisfying and beneficial to others, rooted in love, justice, and compassion. And most of all, it reveals this through faith in God through Christ Jesus.
What do you think? Is the Bible relevant to you?
