TOPIC:
THE REWARDS OF TRUE DISCIPLE
TEXT: MARK 10:23-30
INTRODUCTION:
A reward is something given to someone in recognition of service, effort or achievement. Our heavenly Father has called us to be His disciples in Christ Jesus and occupy ourselves in the service of the kingdom. He has promised us many rewards if we serve Him faithfully.
Our service to God should be done with great zeal and commitment. This should reflect in our consistent Christian living. God is a great rewarder and will never overlook our service rendered for the sake of the kingdom. It is certain that no one will labour in vain for the Lord because He stands by His promises. Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
In this study, we shall examine what our attitudes should be towards the service of the kingdom in view of God’s reward
LESSON OBJECTIVES
The objectives of this study are to :

Discuss the rewards mentioned by Jesus Christ in Mark 10:28-30
Highlights the basis for receiving rewards from the Lord, and
Determine what our attitudes should be towards the service of God in view of His reward.
BIBLE TRUTH:
QUESTION 1A. WHAT IS A REWARD (Mark 10:28-30)
According to the dictionary, a reward is something given to someone in recognition of service, effort or achievement of such a person. A reward is given therefore as a means of appreciating the service or effort of someone by the recipient of such act or service. Our God is a great rewarder. Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ has promised us in the scriptures that whatever we give or do for the sake of the kingdom shall be rewarded appropriately.
QUESTION 2. IN THE LIGHT OF MARK 10:28-30, DISCUSS THE REWARDS MENTIONED BY THE LORD LORD JESUS (Matt 28:20; Heb 13:5b; 2 Cor 1:20)
Many rewards await true disciples of Christ. These rewards are spiritual and physical, now and in the world to come. In Mark 10:29-30, Jesus assured the disciples by saying “Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel’s, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.” There are many other rewards apart from those mentioned above, they include but are not limited to the following: Jesus is the Prince of peace and peace is one of His rewards. He said in John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you…” Another reward worth mentioning is the fact that Jesus has promised to be with us even to the end of age. This means that God’s divine presence is guaranteed. He will never leave nor forsake His own true disciples. The crown of life and eternal life await true disciples. Another reward of true discipleship which any of us may not want to think about is perfection. The Lord Jesus said in Matthew 5:10 “Blessed [are] they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Apostle Paul reiterated this in 2 Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
QUESTION 3. WHAT ARE THE BASES FOR RECEIVING REWARDS FROM THE LORD ? 1Cor
3:8, 12-15; Eph 2:8-9; Phil 2:12-13; Gal 6:7-8.
There are many factors that form the basis for receiving rewards from the Lord. We can only receive reward from the Lord if our services, effort or actions are carried out on the following basis:
We must realize that “the sacrifice of the wicked [is] an abomination to the LORD” (Prov 15:8a). It follows therefore that the bases for receiving rewards from God should be on terms acceptable to Him. Our rewards will be based on our labour. Every man’s work shall be tried and pass through fire to know what sort it is. If the work abides and it’s not burned, he shall receive a reward. Our ability must be dependent on God, by His grace and through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Obedience to divine instruction is a key ingredient in rendering any service unto God. We must also realize that God is working in us, giving us the desire and power to do what pleased Him. We must be totally dependent on God to be able to qualify for His reward. “For by strength shall no man prevail” (1 Sam 2:9b).
In giving (time, talent, resources, etc.) it must be according to our ability and as we purpose in our hearts, not grudgingly, or of necessity but cheerfully because God loves a cheerful giver. In all, we must give liberally because everything that we have comes from God. Above all, we must give our lives completely to the Lord to qualify for His rewards.
QUESTION 4. IN VIEW OF GOD’S REWARDS, WHAT SHOULD BE OUR ATTITUDES TOWARDS HIS SERVICE ? (Lk 17:10; Gal 6:9; 1Cor 9:16-18, 15:58; Col 3:24; Heb 10:35-39; Matt 24:13)
It is obvious that every true disciple will be glad to receive reward from God who has called us into His service. In view of this, our attitude towards the service of God should be that which glorifies the name of the Lord. God’s service should be done with all humility and as an obligation we owe our heavenly Father. After we have done what we are needed to do, we should take it as having done what we ought to have done and give the glory to God always. We should not be weary in well doing, knowing that in due season we will reap if we do not give up. We must render our service unto God willingly, not by compulsion, to receive any reward from Him. As true disciples, we should remain steadfast, unmovable always abounding in the work of the Lord for as much as we know that our labour in the Lord is not in vain in the Lord. “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as unto the Lord and not unto men.”(Col 3:23). We must not cast away our confidence in God as we render services unto Him. Rather we need to be patient so that after we have done the will of God, we might receive the promise. We should not be slothful in our services to God. The rewards will be given to everyone according to their work. Therefore, we must endure to the end.
DAILY LIVING APPLICATION:
Our God is great rewarder. There is nothing we do for the sake of the gospel and the kingdom which is acceptable unto Him that He will overlook. There are many rewards outlined in the scriptures for true disciples. However, for our service to qualify for rewards, they must be rendered in accordance to God’s terms. Knowing therefore that our services to the Lord shall be richly rewarded, let us endeavour to remain steadfast, unmovable and always abounding in the work of the Lord
