The Sound of Music

“The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.” – Psalm 19:8

Years ago I lived near a high school. When the wind was still I could hear the marching band practicing on their field. But whenever the wind was blowing in the opposite direction, all I could here was the bass drum. Boom! Boom! Boom! Yet I knew the rest of the instruments were playing. Some of us were brought up to hear only the steadfast drumbeat of judgment, judgment, judgment! Others, who are tuned in to contemporary culture, hear only the variable sounds of the other instruments sounding mercy, mercy, mercy!

To hear God’s music of joy, we need to hear the whole band – the harmonious balance of all the instruments sounding justice and mercy. If we ask the Holy Spirit to tune our hearts to God’s music, we will discover the band is always playing His song of love and joy. So let me ask – What tune are you hearing from the band today?
