The Source

00:00/01:54

Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Please notice, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad, and the ground barren.” And he said, “Bring me a new bowl, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. Then he went out to the source of the water, and cast in the salt there, and said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘I have healed this water; from it there shall be no more death or barrenness.’” – 2 Kings 2:19-21

When our hearts are not healthy, they perform poorly, which impacts our physical bodies, especially those functions that give us strength and vitality. The same is true for our spiritual hearts. When they are bad, our strength for serving becomes depleted, our witness becomes stale, and our walk with Christ becomes unfruitful. The heart is the “water source” or headwaters of a person, and what happens there determines his or her well-being, physically and spiritually.

In our passage, Elisha purified the water source with salt, and the stream was restored to fruitfulness. Salt symbolizes the Word of God. As it penetrates our hearts, they are cleansed and equipped to pump wholeness throughout our entire being. Thus we become purer and more fruitful. So make sure you’re letting God’s Word purify the headwaters of your heart every day.
