How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them!
Psalm 139:17
Recommended Reading: Psalm 139:1-17
Have you ever tried to study an immensely difficult subject like abstract algebra or quantitative methods in economics? Just reading a simple explanation of these subjects can boggle your mind.
What about theology—the study of God? Though only three letters—GOD—no other subject overwhelms our mind more. God is infinite in every way and all His attributes are eternal. His existence is unending; His holiness undying; His qualities non-contradicting. The study of God is full of mystery and paradox, but never illogical.
While we can’t fully understand all there is to know about God, we can always strive to know Him better. And the more we learn of Him, the greater our devotion to Him. An increasing knowledge of Him leads to growing worship, praise, hope, and joy.
Wayne Grudem wrote, “The study of theology is not merely a theoretical exercise of the intellect. It is a study of the living God, and of the wonders of all his works in creation and redemption. We cannot study this subject dispassionately!”1
Our response to the study of the theology of Scripture should be that of the psalmist who said, “How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God!”
